Easter Traditions in Catalonia: La Mona

One of the Easter traditions in Catalonia is that on Easter Sunday godfathers give their godchilden "La Mona", an Easter cake.

Easter usually falls at the end of March or beginning of April, but bakers and pastry chefs start planning their Easter cakes as early as Christmas, trying to outdo their previous year's efforts. Large chocolate sculptures representing Disney characters, football players, movie characters, and more are usually displayed in patisserie windows starting in March vying for children's attention.

Most of the cakes are decorated with colored feathers, chocolate eggs, and Easter bunnies or chicks. Every year about 500,000 "monas"are eaten in Catalonia.

Here are the Monas that my nieces got this year
