Barcelona wins Champions League final(Comments RSS)

Samuel Eto'o and Juliano Belletti scored in the final 15 minutes to lead Barcelona past Arsenal 2-1 Wednesday night in the final of the European Champions League. Barcelona played with a man-advantage after Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann was ejected in the 20th minute for taking down Eto'o just outside the penalty area.

Arsenal had gone a Champions League-record 10 consecutive games without allowing a goal. Eto'o, a Cameroon star who has won Africa's player of the year award for three straight years, ended the streak in the 76th minute, taking a through ball from Henrik Larsson and beating backup goalkeeper Manuel Almunia.

Belletti, a defender, got the go-ahead goal four minutes later, taking a pass from Larsson and sending a low cross in front that went into the net off Almunia.

Todd, I totally agree, it may have been a better game. But all in all, disallowing the goal was a big negative for Barca, I would have taken the goal over Lehmann's ejection myself. They overcame a lot. I like how they marketed the game: the best defense against the best attack, "Something has to give" as the pre-game tagline read.

Thanks, Doug. I am not as of right now. He said he would send it to me, but it may already be full, he had tons of people wanting to participate. Actually Barcelona has always been in the European football elite, they just haven't been very good at closing the deal: only won the Championship one other time in the early 90's, after getting to the semis or finals quite a few times.
