Cool sites

It has been a little chillier than previous days this morning, we have some clouds. Once the sun comes through, it should quickly warm up. Whenever I post comments about the weather, I remember Mark Twain's great quote: "Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it." . He was certainly a quotable character, here's another good one: "A banker is a fellow who lends you his umbrella when the sun is shining, but wants it back the minute it begins to rain. "

You can check out many more of his quotes here.

This is a very popular site by now, but some people may still not be familiar with it: Daily Candy, good example of word-of-mouth marketing.

Also, yet another clever use of Google Maps in Gawker, a trendy site for Manhattanites. Gawker Stalker plots celebrity sightings in quasi real-time. Sparked some controversy recently because celebs were supposedly concerned about being tracked, haha. The response from the site was delay postings by 15 minutes.

Talking about maps, I've recently been impressed by Microsoft's Windows Live Local. The service is currently in Beta. It's powered by Virtual Earth. The detail of the aerial views is impressive, and the bird eye's views, see sample below, are even better - although only available for certain areas. You can zoom into both aerial and bird's eye views.

Atlanta Motor Speedway - Saturday

Got here bright and early this morning, well before the crowd started pouring in. NASCAR fans by the tens of thousands will be here by mid morning.

Jeff Gordon hopes a turnaround that started at Atlanta Motor Speedway last October takes another step forward in the Golden Corral 500.

Carl Edwards, meanwhile, hopes to somehow fashion a repeat of his weekend at the 1.54-mile oval a year ago. It was a career-changing weekend in which Edwards won his first Busch Series and first Nextel Cup Series races in a span of about 24 hours.

Edwards' performance was shocking, even more so than Gordon's struggles at 1.5- and 2-mile tracks most of last season. But a test at the track last October sparked something in the No. 24 team. Gordon finished a so-so 13th at California Speedway last month, but a fifth-place run at Las Vegas a week ago has him geared up for Atlanta.

St. Patrick

And of course, it is St Patrick's today - Happy St Patrick's day. Amazing how time flies. New York City has the largest St Patrick's parade in the country, about 5 miles long, thousands of people participate. It's been celebrated for 245 years (!)

In Ireland, people observing Lent are allowed to break their fasts for one day: St. Patrick’s Day. This traditional feast is typically celebrated in Ireland, and the world 'round, with pitchers of Guinness and plates of corned beef; any Irish meal should include rich pastries and hearty breads as well.

GA

In Atlanta, GA. Got here yesterday, trip had some delays, but was fine. Spent some time at Atlanta Motor Speedway yesterday, working. Drove around, quickly checked out the CNN World Headquarters in the city.

Also drove by Georgia Tech, cool. The area has an unusually high concentration of engineering bookstores, tons of geeks around

Been watching this show this season. Marlena turned me on to it. It's very intense, very good writing.
