wed night

it's TG weekend, awesome. a little cooler today, but not bad, in the 50s. bill got a kindle, seems very happy with it .

been playing some more with my second generation WD Live TV media player. it is really great, i discovered i can place jpgs in the movies directory and have them be used as thumbnails, so you can browse the movie collection by thumbnail, perfect.

tomorrow we are having dinner with hans and jodi at the smith, cool

just eating dinner - i know, kinda late, but wasn't hungry sooner. watched the hills, now CSI NY. i am way behind on CSI NY, just not enough hours in the day to keep up with everything i would want.

tue

worked out today, will totally be sore tomorrow . so, my cool new WD Live arrived, so fast. it's tiny, really tiny, about half the size i had pictured it would be. hooked it up via hdmi, networked it, turned it out, and voila, streaming all kinds of files off my server in minutes. works awesome, and it does an amazing job at playing mkv files too. looks like it was a smart choice for a media player!

watching, or fast forwarding through melrose. gotta go to be soon, it's getting late.

Mon

Alright, deactivating the "turn off to save power" on my Airlink card didn't do it, the card still turned off after a few hours by itself. Maybe if I rebooted it would take. In any event, I already ordered a new Cisco/Linksys one, and it's the 300 Mbps version vs the current one "only" 150 Mbps. Should be good.

Got home late today, and the worst part is that I got to the office way too early in the morning, so it made for a day that was way too long, boooh

Honeymoon trip pics

OK, I processed a small batch of the thousands of pictures we took on our honeymoon. Enough to post an initial album about Rome, The Colosseum, The Pantheon, The Roman Forum, etc. Rome is definitely impressive, highly recommended. More to come.

the vampire diaries & home theatre file playback

been watching this new show, i am kind of behind, on episode 6 now while the broadcast just played 10. that's good, i can watch them all in sequence at 40 min a piece. i got the episodes as mkv files, which are a pain because no device (or very few devices) can play them back.

as a temporary solution i used nicole's lenovo netbook hooked up via the hdmi port to the tv. worked great, the files were 720p and they played fine. longer term, though, i have ordered a WD Live player, it handles all known file formats, has a small footprint, it can be networked, and it's pretty economical. so far i have been using the xbox to play back, which works well, but it does choke on a few formats, like mkv and a few others. you can get around it by changing the container to MP4 (no need to re-compress, as i mentioned in the past), but then you have to downmix the sound to 2 channels because the xbox won't play multi-channel audio inside the MP4 container, bah. in any event, the new solution should do everything i want easily. will hook up into a DVI input on the received, that way it can be output either on the TV or on the projector.
