jury duty - day 2

today was my second day of service, reported to the court building at 9 am. Sat in the jury assembly room, waiting for the country clerk to take attendance. then another clerk came and told us they had 3 cases ready for today, and they would call us in once they got them sorted out. waited another hour, they came again and asked us to move to another big room, separating us from the jurors who were still being questioned about yesterday's case. Waited another while, then the boss county clerk lady came and said that the 3 cases had settled because nobody wanted to go to court the day before ThanksGiving - cool. That means she handed us out our golden ticket: a certificate of having served for 2 days that is good for at least 4 years for federal cases, and 6 years for new york supreme court cases. so, i am off the hook, awesome!

jury duty day 1

had to report for jury duty today, had a summons for the supreme court in state of new york. i showed up at the appropriate court building at 8:45 am., there was a bit of a long line to get thru security, but moved reasonably fast. once in, headed to the right floor, and waited outside my room till 9 am. at 9 o'clock sharp they opened the doors of my jury assembly room. a large room with 2 symmetrical areas. we took some forms to fill out, and sat down. there must have been enough room for probably 400-500 people, it was a big room. we were maybe 150-200 i would guess. we watched some videos about the process, then filled out forms, then the clerks told us what to expect. we waited for a while, some more than others, till our name was called. the chairs were padded, and fairly comfortable, which helped. there was also wi-fi (very weak and slow, but better than nothing).

once your name was called, you had to head to another room for the jury selection process. the attorneys for the plaintiff and defendants exposed their cases in plain words, and told us the one particular case at hand would have a significant amount of expert testimony, making it likely to last well into mid December. that seemed super long, impossible for me to miss work for so long. they asked first for anybody able to commit to that duration. out of a batch of 55 jurors, only 4 came forward. the rest of us had to go in one by one and expose our case, explain the hardship we would incur, etc. in my case it took 3 different trips and a lot of explanatin, but finally i was excused out of this one jury. i went back to the original assembly room. waited around for another couple hours till i was told i could fo home for the day.

i have to go back tomorrow for my send day. i hope i don't get picked again!

tech news

looks like lots of tech news today: facebook is finally releasing a phone with their own social features built in - codename buffy. doesn't sound too compelling yet i guess we'll have to see. the manufacturer is HTC, a capable one.

also, forget about 6 degrees or separation, new FB studies show it's 5, or more exactly 4.74.

and both netflix and groupon continue to take a beating. groupon is down to near IPO prices. let's see if the make it in the end, seems like a lot of trouble ahead.

monday

wow, can't believe it's almost 12:30 am, got home late tonight as most mondays. just ate dinner, now watching seinfeld, the summer of george. george just slipped walking down the stairs on the ultra-glossy invitation he dropped, super funny ))

black friday this week, let's see what deals pop up. not really looking to buy anything but always fun to consider.

could a lot of noise about SOPA, there is no way a law like that should pass, it's a very slippery slope.

sunday: union square christmas fair

The Union Square Christmas Fair is already up and running. We took a stroll this afternoon, the weather was super-nice, in the high 60s, great Fall so far.

Picture Album: Union Square Fall

I also upgraded the quality of the pictures of our oil paintings, made them sharper and nicer.
