the vampire diaries & home theatre file playback

been watching this new show, i am kind of behind, on episode 6 now while the broadcast just played 10. that's good, i can watch them all in sequence at 40 min a piece. i got the episodes as mkv files, which are a pain because no device (or very few devices) can play them back.

as a temporary solution i used nicole's lenovo netbook hooked up via the hdmi port to the tv. worked great, the files were 720p and they played fine. longer term, though, i have ordered a WD Live player, it handles all known file formats, has a small footprint, it can be networked, and it's pretty economical. so far i have been using the xbox to play back, which works well, but it does choke on a few formats, like mkv and a few others. you can get around it by changing the container to MP4 (no need to re-compress, as i mentioned in the past), but then you have to downmix the sound to 2 channels because the xbox won't play multi-channel audio inside the MP4 container, bah. in any event, the new solution should do everything i want easily. will hook up into a DVI input on the received, that way it can be output either on the TV or on the projector.

wireless usb card turning off

I think I figured out why the wireless N card has been turning off after a few hours: very simple, power savings. The driver had the box to let the computer turn off the device to save power checked, and so it did. I just turned that off, let's see if it stays on, my guess is that of course it will.

fairly satisfied with Airlink's cheapo little USB card, it was like $25 at Microcenter and works great.

new vacuum cleaner

Our vacuum cleaner broke down again, so I finally went ahead and ordered a new one online. I got the Hoover U6485900 Anniversary WindTunnel Self Propelled Vacuum. It is highly recommended by Consumer Reports, and I got a reasonable deal on it.

Sunday - grocery shopping

We went to Trader Joes to get some groceries for the upcoming weekend, Nicole's family will be visiting. This was just a small set of items that Trader Joes carries that we like, the rest will be delivered via Fresh Direct. Trader Joes was a zoo, as usual, the line is so long that it wraps around the entire store. This store is the highest grossing in the country. It actually didn't take that much, they are fairly well organized.

I was going to twitter about it, but as usual the 3G coverage for AT&T is awful, so no luck. When I launch Tweetie, my iphone client, it spins for minutes trying to download the data, and it typically never comes back, the speed is slow. AT&T has got to do something about this, their data network in the NYC metro sucks, can't keep up.
