MapReduce

Six years since it first applied for it, Google has finally received a patent for its MapReduce parallel programming model. Unbelievable. Bah, further evidence that the whole patent system is broken, how can they give them a patent for that?? “Map” and “reduce” functions have been around for a long, long time, Google didn’t invent MapReduce, that's just silly.

Hopefully they won't do anything evil with the patent, more likely to be a defensive move than anything else.

Haiti

The latest Haiti Earthquake news has the official death toll at over 70,000 and rising. One week after the 7.0 Haiti Earthquake hit the island, the situation is pretty bad. Nicole and I are going to donate tomorrow.

See impactful image and headline in today's edition of El Mundo, one of the largest Spanish newspapers. It reads "Hell is spelled with an H"

Tue

Just got home a few min ago. Trying to transcode Couples Retreat from a bunch of VOBs files (from a BR rip) into a single AVI with an h.264 transport stream, much easier to move around and copy to my media server.

Trading emails with Jordi, looks like he has secured our reservation for September at El Bulli, cool.
