Windows homegroup network difficulties

Geez, had some network difficulties at home today when I least expected it. Turns out Windows machine self-applied their regular patches last night, and a Windows 7 box decided to turn on its homegroup without asking me anything. That caused it to try to become the browser master and disregard any other workgroups I had previously setup. That in turn caused media players and other devices on the LAN to stop seeing each other, which was puzzling for a few minutes till I realized what was going on.

As soon as I turned off the Windows 7 homegroup, everything started working again.

It is surprising how frail the state of computing in general and home networking is. With more and more networked devices, things are only going to get more complex at home. Simplification and more automated configuration is needed. Computers still behave as if computer engineers are the only people using them.
