khalesse

watched episode 10, the season 1 finale of game of thrones. great show so far, great job adapting the first book.

One of the great triumphs of this show was how it handled the journey of Daenerys Targaryen, and Emilia Clarke’s revelatory performance. When the series began, it was obvious that Clarke was a good physical fit for the role, but there were serious doubts in my mind whether she would be capable of making Dany’s transformation from a meek pawn of her psycho brother to the Mother of Dragons. As the season progressed, I began to understand that Clarke’s seeming vacuousness in the early episodes was, indeed, acting, and I completely bought her as khaleesi. Though the end of this episode, as well as the first season and the book, was the reveal of the dragons, the true emotional climax for me was the heart-wrenching scene of Daenerys saying goodbye to her catatonic Drogo, then euthanizing him. Clarke had to carry the devastating weight of that scene all on her own, and she nailed it. She conveyed the unbearable loss of her child and her “sun and stars”, as well as her decision to accept their passing and move past them by hatching her true children.

the last scene with the dragons put a perfect ending to the season.
