windows 7 ui

i have a couple initial grievances regarding windows 7's UI so far. the first one is that the task bar, which now looks a little more like the mac dock, cannot be made to stay permanently on but be under all windows. you had always been able to do this, and this is exactly how i liked it. the 2 options they give you now is: a) make it so that it hides and when you rollover it slides in or b) make it permanently present but staying always on top of all other windows. i don't like either option. i wonder who was the bright ui designer that decided to take away the functionality.

secondly, i don't like the new design for the icons on the taskbar. they made them all white, which makes them look disabled. some of them in particular, like the wireless signal strenght indicator, when you see white bars that typically used to mean on all previous OS's that the device wasnt' working. once it worked, the bars turned green, or blue. not now, they are white, and when it doesn't work they blink and show a red x. a step back, in my opinion. the power charging indicator looks real weird in white as well. bah.

the third thing i have noticed is that performance on an older video chipset is a little worse than vista. that was surprising to me, as windows 7 was introduced as "faster" in all ways, but i do not believe that is quite the case. my almost 3 year old Dell laptop does not perform very well with it. i was expecting and improvement over vista, and i think at best it matches vista.

in any event, i am sure it will be a different thing on my desktop once i take the plunge.
